Now that you have completed your purpose statement (which we did on my last blog), you are ready to write personal goals.
Your purpose statement should describe who you want to be in this world. Since it is who you want to be and not who you are right now, we need to figure out who we need to be or become to live that purpose.
That is exactly what personal goals are.
They are helping you become your best self so that you can live out your purpose.
Some examples:
If you need a lot of energy and vitality to live your purpose then you might need more exercise, to lose weight, to sleep more, to eat better, or to drink more water.
If you need more knowledge and certainty to live your purpose, you might want to read more, watch more instructional videos, or go to more seminars.
If you need to relax or focus more so you can get more done, you might want to take up tai chi, or meditation, see an acupuncturist, get more massages, or journal more.
If your health is not ideal you might want to see a chiropractor, naturopath, medical doctor, or nutritionist.
All of these can be written out as personal goals to make you more of the person that would live your purpose. Just make sure that any goal you write helps you to create your purpose. If it does not then either your purpose is off or you have written a goal that sounds good but you are likely to not accomplish it.
Your goals and your purpose must connect!
Now that you have some examples let me show you how we write our goals to make sure we accomplish them.
Step 1: Be specific. The more specific the better, your mind is a GPS and will go find it. If you say you want more money I will mail you a penny and goal accomplished. Be super specific and make sure it is something we can actually measure, that is how you know it is not too vague. For example, you don’t say I want a new car,you say I want a 2009 Porsche 911 4S black exterior, black interior, chrome rims, etc.
Step 2: Action Steps. You need to actually write done the steps you will take to accomplish the goal.
Step 3: Set a deadline. Your mind loves deadlines, even if it means cramming the night before, we always hit our deadlines. Set the date you will be done. I don’t recommend the end of the year, once the Holidays hit people get distracted.
Step 4: Why accomplish it? How does it feel to accomplish it? What does it change in your life? The 4th step is the most important, it is why we write goals. It is the feeling we are after, not the actual goal. If your goal is weight… I will be more congruent in my life, have more confidence, be an example for my children, be able to breathe better, wear better clothes, etc.
So get going and write your personal goals and write all 4 steps to each. On the next Blog we will talk Professional Goals.
